A Run for Kids

This year at Christmas, I received this quote from two students to hang on my wall.  I couldn't have said it any better myself  :)  One now hangs outside our classroom and the other hangs in my home office.  (HUGE thank you to those parents, you all must really "get me").  Of all the gifts to unwrap, this tugged at my heart this year!

Last year I had a student, Khloe, who was diagnosed at four years old with Neurofibromatosis.  Khloe is full of excitement, spunk, energy, and a love of life that is so contagious she lights up every room she enters!  Could you imagine learning that your child, at four years old, has hundreds of tumors on their brain.  Currently Khloe travels to DC for appointments every three months to monitor these tumors.  I couldn't imagine the alteration in life for her parents, Donnie and Kara, and the strength it takes to remain happy, loving, and most importantly teaching these traits to their children.  When Kara posted that their family was running in a race to help bring awareness to what Neurofibromatosis (NF) is and to help raise money for Children's Tumor Society, it was not even a second thought that I was going to join along and run it with them!

Cupid's Undie Run, yes you read that right!  Cupid's Undie Run!  Running a race in our undies on Sunday with temperatures as high as 22 degrees to help raise awareness and funds to find a cure for NF. I would do this race for any one of "my kids."  I am running this race for Khloe, for my niece Tamera, and for any of my future students to help find a cure and #EndNF.  I couldn't imagine a Christmas morning waking up not knowing if it was the last with my sweet five year old.

Part of my role as a Pre K teacher is to help bring awareness and support to families and organizations that benefit our community.  Last year you might recall many Jefferson County households dying their hair "Blue for Bean."  Khloe's nickname is Bean.  It is with great honor and joy that I am able to participate in this run.

If you want more information on our run, please go to:  http://my.cupids.org/shellyeldridge

Think about us on Sunday as it is going to be a cold one!  Anything for our kids!
